Ceuta refugee deaths highlight August news slowdown

Aylan Kurdi, a three‑year‑old Syrian‑Kurdish boy, died on 2 September 2015 on a beach in Bodrum, Turkey; his photograph taken by Turkish photographer Nilüfer Demir became a global symbol of the Mediterranean refugee crisis. Recent incidents in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta have left around sixty migrants dead after drowning, but the deaths received limited media coverage because many broadcasters and journalists were on summer vacation in August. The commentary also notes other Spanish news at the time, including wildfires on the peninsula and the Community of Madrid’s purchase in April of a six‑million‑euro apartment in Chamberí for President Isabel Ayuso.
