Ceuta seagull population affected by chemical poisoning outbreak

The Association for the Defense of Urban Trees, Biodiversity and the Environment (DAUBMA) has reported a chemical poisoning outbreak affecting yellow-legged seagulls (Larus michahellis) along the coast of Ceuta. More than 40 birds have been rescued in recent weeks exhibiting severe symptoms, including neuromotor dysfunction, partial paralysis, disorientation, extreme weakness, and dehydration.

Technical reports suggest the intoxication is caused by surfactants, preservatives, perfumes, and silicones found in human hygiene products such as gels, shampoos, and cosmetics. DAUBMA identifies the primary source as the illegal use of these products in public beach showers, particularly at Trampolín Beach. This practice violates local municipal ordinances that prohibit the discharge of soaps and detergents into runoff water.

In response to the outbreak, the organization is calling for toxicological analyses and the temporary closure of beach showers where regulations are being ignored to prevent further ecological damage.
