Ceuta small businesses to receive government aid after migrant influx
Around 50,000 migrants, mostly Moroccan, entered the Spanish autonomous city of Ceuta on 31 July, triggering an abrupt 35% drop in electricity consumption for retail shops on 31 July and 1 August. Although much of the loss was later recovered, overall small‑business activity remains 10‑11% below normal levels.
Vice President and Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo announced that the government is preparing a support plan for Ceuta’s small retailers. The ministry is monitoring daily electricity data, consulting the Chamber of Commerce and the Confederation of Entrepreneurs of Ceuta, and considering measures such as suspending the patron saint festivals, addressing a short‑term tourism decline and canceling reservations. Ceuta, with 83,000 inhabitants, has a service‑dominated labour market and recorded a 22.41% unemployment rate in Q2 2024, the highest in Spain.
