Ceuta solidarity protests spark defiance among Spanish Socialist mayors

Thousands of people gathered in Chiclana to demonstrate in solidarity with Ceuta following a significant migration influx. Protesters called for the resignation of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, citing security concerns and perceived government passivity regarding the situation in the Spanish enclave.

The demonstrations were supported by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces. In a notable act of political defiance, eight out of sixteen Socialist mayors in the province of Cádiz, including Chiclana Mayor José María Román, participated in the rallies despite direct orders from the PSOE leadership to abstain. The party leadership had previously issued a directive to avoid such demonstrations, characterizing them as potential drivers of hate speech.

The local mayors' decision to join the protests highlights a growing internal rift within the PSOE, as officials prioritized local sentiment and national sovereignty concerns over party discipline. The crisis in Ceuta is viewed by local leaders not only as a humanitarian and migratory issue but also as a geopolitical challenge involving pressure from Morocco on Spanish territories.
