Ceylon Chamber of Commerce hosts bilateral business council meetings

The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce recently hosted annual general meetings for its Sri Lanka–Canada and Sri Lanka–Japan Business Councils to strengthen bilateral economic ties.

At the Sri Lanka–Canada Business Council's 35th AGM, attended by Canadian High Commissioner Isabelle Martin, Mohamad Hameez was re-elected as President for the 2026/2027 term. The council appointed a new Executive Committee and established subcommittees focused on membership development, women entrepreneurship, and corporate social responsibility. Kala Amirthalingam was named Honorary Goodwill Ambassador for Women & Child Development and Empowerment.

During the 47th AGM of the Sri Lanka–Japan Business Council, Japanese Ambassador Akio Isomata emphasized three priorities for economic relations: forward-looking trade and investment policies, domestic industrial policy promotion, and expanded renewable energy investment. Ambassador Isomata encouraged Sri Lanka to adopt an export-oriented industrial model and noted the importance of the proposed Sri Lanka–Japan Economic Corridor. Council President Athulla R F Edirisinghe highlighted the need for increased Japanese foreign direct investment and cooperation with the government to capitalize on upcoming economic opportunities.
