CFB Esquimalt and BC Wildfire Service plan prescribed burn near Metchosin

The District of Metchosin and the BC Wildfire Service are planning a prescribed burn at Rocky Point, south of the municipality. The operation is part of the CFB Esquimalt Prescribed Fire Program, which has been active since 2017.

The program aims to reduce wildfire risk, manage combustible vegetation, maintain military training areas, and support the restoration of sensitive ecosystems, such as Garry Oak habitats. The burn will only proceed when weather, wind, fuel, and smoke-dispersion conditions are deemed suitable by the BC Wildfire Service.

Residents are advised that the burn may cause smoke, temporary changes to local air quality, and the presence of firefighting personnel in the area. Authorities have requested that locals stay away from Rocky Point during the operation. Metchosin Fire Department crews may observe or participate to gain experience in fuel-management practices.
