CFB Wainwright fire kills four soldiers in Alberta

A devastating fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta has resulted in the deaths of four soldiers and left 39 people hospitalized, including 19 in critical condition. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon during a live-fire training exercise.

According to Major-General Wade Rutland, the fire spread with extreme speed after a sudden wind shift, traveling approximately one kilometre in just 36 seconds. High winds, with gusts reaching up to 100 km/h, caused the flames to breach the base perimeter and spread into surrounding rural areas. While some reports suggest the explosion may have been caused by munitions striking a gas pipeline or well, official causes remain under investigation by the Canadian Armed Forces and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

Prime Minister Mark Carney described the event as one of the “worst tragedies” for the Canadian military on domestic soil during peacetime. The four deceased soldiers have been identified as Private Aidan Goulding, Private Shaun Farrell, Private Hayden Lykkemark, and Sergeant Morgan Wong. Hospitals in Edmonton have implemented emergency protocols to manage the influx of patients.
