CFDT proposes taxing all French inheritances from the first euro

The CFDT trade union has proposed a significant overhaul of inheritance and gift taxation in France, advocating for the removal of current tax exemptions. The proposal suggests taxing all transfers of wealth starting from the first euro, effectively seeking to eliminate the existing €100,000 tax-free allowance that children currently receive from each parent.

CFDT General Secretary Marylise Léon described the measure as a step toward social and fiscal justice, aiming to broaden the tax base and curb wealth optimization. The union intends for this issue to become a central topic in the 2027 presidential election campaign.

Implementing such a reform would represent a major shift from the current General Tax Code. While the proposal aims to address wealth inequality, it raises concerns regarding the potential impact on middle-class and modest households who currently benefit from existing exemptions.
