CFE criticized for failing to repair broken manhole covers in Playa del Carmen

Local officials in Playa del Carmen are criticizing the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) for failing to address broken manhole covers throughout the city. Councilman Juan Novelo Zapata stated that despite numerous meetings and promises, the utility company has not responded to over 600 requests from the municipal government regarding the issue.

The broken covers pose safety risks to pedestrians, motorcyclists, and drivers. While the CFE recently deployed additional personnel to manage power outages, officials noted that the company's presence was temporary and did not resolve the underlying infrastructure concerns. A proposal has been made for the municipality to allocate its own resources to fix the hazards.
