CFE retirees protest in Sinaloa over pension cuts

Retirees from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) held peaceful protests at company facilities in Sinaloa, Mexico, to demand the restoration of their pension benefits. The demonstrators are protesting the effects of a reform to Article 127 of the Mexican Constitution, which they claim has reduced their retirement payments by 50 percent.

The protesters argue that the reform, approved in April, is being applied retroactively, affecting approximately 90,000 retirees nationwide, including former employees of CFE and Pemex. They contend that their pensions are acquired rights based on collective bargaining agreements that should be respected.

While the retirees support investigating irregularities in high-value pension schemes, they oppose the indiscriminate across-the-board cuts. Representatives stated that dialogue tables have been established with the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches, and they are awaiting progress in negotiations during September. Messages from the protesters are intended to be delivered to President Claudia Sheinbaum.
