CFL board approves potential Quebec City expansion
The Canadian Football League (CFL) board of governors has reportedly voted unanimously to approve the potential expansion of a franchise into Quebec City. The decision, which took place on September 9, paves the way for a tenth team provided specific requirements are met.
Real estate magnate William Trudel is identified as the primary driving force behind the expansion initiative. Commissioner Stewart Johnston noted that the league has held productive discussions with a local group working to bring professional football to the region.
A potential expansion team could begin play as early as 2030 or 2031, though the project is contingent upon the construction of a suitable stadium. Current plans involve a proposed 25,000-seat open-air facility. While the Trudel Group has stated they will only comment when there is something concrete to discuss, the move marks a significant step toward reviving professional football in the Quebec City area.
