CFL implements new player award selection process

The Canadian Football League (CFL) has introduced changes to its end-of-season player award selection process. The new system aims to highlight individual performances through a multi-stage voting method involving teams and representatives from the Canadian Football Writers' Association (CFWA).

Under the amended rules, any player receiving at least one vote in a specific category during team-level balloting becomes eligible for the final league-wide vote. The final stage will involve 56 voters, consisting of 36 local CFWA members and 20 national representatives. Additionally, the league will now select three finalists per category regardless of division, moving away from the previous system of selecting two candidates per division.

The league also announced it will discontinue its traditional awards ceremony, opting instead for surprise announcements to reveal winners toward the end of the season. The schedule for announcing nominees and finalists for various honors, including Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year, has been set for late October.
