CFPB examiner Fatima Batie warns staff of unpleasant fallout for aggressive oversight
Chief Examiner Fatima Batie of the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau sent an internal email on May 13 warning that staff would face “most unpleasant” consequences if they were too aggressive in supervising financial firms. The message was sent to many mid‑level supervisors as the agency prepared to resume inspections after a long pause.
The warning reflects the Trump administration’s shift toward a less intrusive supervisory approach at the CFPB, a broader regulatory retreat from the finance sector, and follows statements by former interim director Russell Vought that the agency should do “as little damage as possible.” Vought had suspended examinations when he took control in early 2025 and was slated to step down as acting chief, with the Senate yet to confirm a replacement. In November, the CFPB announced plans to require staff to recite a lengthy “humility pledge” at the start of exams, a reminder echoed in Batie’s email.
The CFPB and the White House declined to comment on the email, and attempts to reach Batie were unsuccessful.
