CFR Cluj risks insolvency as salaries unpaid and travel funds lacking

Romanian club CFR Cluj is confronting a severe financial crisis. Players have gone unpaid for about four months, prompting several to file complaints with the Romanian Football Federation. The club's main financier, businessman Nelu Varga, now considers filing for insolvency a realistic option, and a request is expected to be submitted to court.

President Iuliu Mureșan resigned, citing exhaustion after trying to steer the team through the turmoil. Despite on‑field success, such as a 5‑0 win over FC Voluntari, the club lacks the cash needed for upcoming European matches. Sources say a charter flight to Norway for the Conference League third‑round tie would cost over €150,000, plus additional accommodation expenses, which the club cannot cover.

Club director Ricardo Cadu, who returned three months ago, affirmed he has no plans to leave and is focused on resolving the financial issues. Previously, sponsor Alin Vădan stepped in to fund a charter to Armenia for the previous round, but the recurring lack of funds underscores the depth of the crisis.
