CFTC proposes new regulations for prediction markets
The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has introduced regulatory proposals to include event contracts within the federal definition of financial derivatives. This move aims to distinguish prediction markets from traditional casino gambling and strengthen federal jurisdiction following legal challenges from various states against operators such as Kalshi and Polymarket.
Separately, Kalshi reported a record weekly contract volume of approximately US$ 19.03 billion between October 5 and October 11, 2026.
