CFTC reviews computing capacity derivatives as GPU futures approach launch

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is seeking public comment on the potential creation of a derivatives market for artificial intelligence computing capacity. The agency has submitted a formal request for review to the White House’s Office of Management and Budget, a move that signals regulatory interest in treating computing power as a tradeable commodity similar to energy or agricultural products.

Major exchange operators are already preparing for this shift. CME Group, in partnership with Silicon Data, has planned a launch for October 5 of futures contracts linked to GPU rental price benchmarks. These contracts aim to provide price discovery and standardized pricing for a market that currently lacks it. The products are intended to help AI developers hedge training costs, assist cloud providers in managing capacity, and offer investors exposure to AI infrastructure.

In a related development, Touchmark Technologies, Inc. recently launched a commercial forward market designed to allow enterprise buyers to secure forward AI inference compute capacity at discounts to spot prices. This platform aims to provide a compliant structure for physical forward delivery to meet growing institutional demand for GPU compute derivatives.
