CGIL celebrates 120 years with focus on labor rights and reform

The CGIL trade union is celebrating its 120th anniversary with a series of international events in Milan focused on the theme ‘The transformations of work. The person at the center’. General Secretary Maurizio Landini emphasized that the union's history must serve the present, advocating for workers to be protagonists in the face of technological, economic, and environmental changes.

Key priorities identified by the union include addressing job precariousness, improving wages, and implementing fiscal reforms to reduce the tax burden on employees and pensioners. Landini also called for taxing corporate profits and financial rents rather than labor. The union is pushing for structural solutions to energy costs and increased investment in renewable sources to ensure national autonomy.

Discussions at the Milan summit also covered the impact of artificial intelligence on employment and the necessity of managing the energy transition through new skills and infrastructure. The CGIL has announced a major national mobilization scheduled for October 17 in Rome to demand concrete protections and public service improvements in health, education, and training.
