CGIL files complaint with Italy's Court of Auditors over Messina Strait Bridge spending

The national CGIL trade union, led by Secretary‑General Maurizio Landini, submitted an exposé to the Court of Auditors (Corte dei Conti) – through the regional procurements in Sicily and Lazio and the General Prosecutor's office for Sicily – demanding a audit of the public funds allocated to the Messina Strait Bridge project.

The union points to a total cost that has already exceeded €13 billion and warns that the final price is still undefined, that EU procurement and environmental rules may have been breached, and that financing for essential complementary infrastructure remains missing. The CGIL stresses that “when billions of euros of citizens’ money are at stake, it is a duty to demand transparency, legality and proper use of public resources” and adds that “every euro wasted on the bridge is an euro taken from hospitals, schools and real infrastructure the South needs.” The Court of Auditors had previously highlighted similar criticisms in its review of the CIPESS decree.

CGIL seeks full judicial scrutiny to ensure that public money is used lawfully and in the general interest, arguing that misallocation would further widen the socioeconomic gap in Italy’s southern regions.
