CGT union calls for strike to protect public services and Social Security

The CGT trade union has called for a major mobilization of public service workers to protest budget cuts and the degradation of social services. On September 15, unions representing health, social action, and chemical sectors plan to strike to demand ‘100% Social Security for all.’

Union representatives highlight that healthcare workers faced a difficult summer characterized by staff shortages, saturated emergency departments, and insufficient hospital beds. The CGT argues that the current system is being weakened by a shift toward private insurance and that funding must match the population's needs through massive hiring in hospitals and medico-social establishments.

CGT General Secretary Sophie Binet emphasized the essential role of public servants during crises, such as heatwaves and forest fires, noting that these workers provide critical support when infrastructure is under pressure. As debates regarding the 2027 budget begin, the union is pushing the government to move away from a logic of strict budgetary savings and toward increased investment in public services.
