CGTP considers general strike in Portugal amid housing protests
The CGTP trade union confederation has stated it does not rule out a new general strike involving both public and private sectors, though it cautioned against making such a decision precipitously. The union emphasized that any large-scale action must be timed to ensure success and meet specific objectives.
The possibility of a strike follows a proposal from housing activists in Lisbon and Porto for an “Iberian general strike” on November 11. While the CGTP noted that recent labor struggles in sectors such as hospitality, education, public administration, and transport have intensified, it did not commit to the November 11 date, citing the need for preparation.
In contrast, the UGT union reported that it has not received any formal invitation or challenge regarding the proposed coordinated strike with Spanish labor movements.
