CGTP warns against legislative threats to labor rights in Peru

The General Confederation of Workers of Peru (CGTP) is warning against potential legislative reforms that could undermine fundamental labor rights. The union has expressed concern over a government proposal for delegated legislative powers that might allow for the modification of protections regarding severance pay (CTS), bonuses, vacations, working hours, overtime, and protection against arbitrary dismissal.

In a meeting with the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Óscar Reto Otero, CGTP Secretary General Gerónimo López Sevillano urged lawmakers to prevent initiatives that affect both public and private sector employees. The union also criticized contradictions regarding the minimum wage; while the government announced an increase to S/ 1,300, the matter was subsequently referred to the National Council for Work and Employment Promotion (CNTPE), where the union fears business sector influence may stall the update.

The CGTP maintains that any legislative changes must preserve existing guarantees and warns that attempts to flexibilize labor laws under the guise of competitiveness or formalization threaten workers' stability.
