Cha Eun Woo Files Tax Appeal After Paying 13 Billion Won

South Korean singer‑actor Cha Eun‑Woo, a member of the boy band ASTRO, paid approximately 13 billion won (about US$9.5 million) to settle a tax assessment issued by the National Tax Service (NTS). Days later his agency Fantagio confirmed that he filed an appeal with the Tax Tribunal to have the assessment cancelled. The agency said, “Cha Eun‑Woo has filed the tax appeal in accordance with the procedures provided by law in order to obtain a legal ruling.”

The dispute stems from an earlier investigation that alleged Cha used a one‑person company registered in his mother’s name as a “paper company,” leading the NTS to initially assess over 20 billion won in back taxes. After adjustments, the final amount was reduced to 13 billion won, which Cha paid before the appeal. He is currently serving his mandatory military service and has publicly stated respect for the NTS process. The appeal is ongoing and details remain undisclosed.

The case has drawn public attention in South Korea and among international fans, highlighting issues of celebrity tax compliance and the legal avenues available for taxpayers to contest assessments.
