Chabad House in Sri Lanka faces protests from Buddhist monks

Buddhist monks and local residents in Hiriketiya, Sri Lanka, have staged protests demanding the removal or relocation of a newly opened Chabad House. The facility, which provides religious services, kosher dining, and hospitality for Jewish travelers, has become a focal point of community tension approximately one month after its establishment.

Protesters have called on authorities to investigate whether the center obtained the necessary licenses and regulatory approvals to operate. Chabad officials reported that the facility and its visitors have faced threats, including the use of firecrackers, stones, and loud music. During a recent Shabbat meal, officials stated that Israeli visitors were confronted and threatened by individuals carrying sticks, though an increased police presence eventually stabilized the situation.

The unrest reflects broader local concerns regarding the rapid commercialization of the coastal tourist destination and the potential erosion of the community’s cultural and religious identity due to expanding foreign-oriented businesses.
