Chabad House in Sri Lanka targeted by antisemitic protesters

A newly established Chabad House in the coastal town of Hiriketiya, Sri Lanka, has been targeted by antisemitic protesters and online incitement. The center, founded by Rabbi Yossi Gabai as part of the global Chabad-Lubavitch movement, was intended to serve as a religious and cultural hub for Jewish travelers and the local community.

Hostility escalated during Shabbos when a large group of protesters gathered outside the facility. Protesters reportedly used loudspeakers to threaten those inside and threw stones and firecrackers into the compound, shattering several windows. While hundreds of Jewish travelers were gathered inside for meals and services, no injuries were reported. Police were called to disperse the crowd, though protesters reportedly returned in larger numbers later that evening.

The backlash follows an organized campaign of social media incitement and false claims targeting the Jewish presence in the area. The incidents highlight the rapid emergence of antisemitic sentiment in the region following the center's opening.
