Chabad Loft congregation faces eviction in NYC lease dispute

Chabad Loft, a Jewish congregation and community hub in Greenwich Village, is facing eviction following a legal dispute with its landlord over lease terms. The congregation operates out of the Kavanah Space at 10 E. Eighth St., a 2,800-square-foot facility used for religious services, a kosher cafe, and community events.

Rabbi Jerry Bankhalter, also known as Rabbi Yakov, claims the congregation has two years remaining on its lease. However, the landlord, Lynch Family Associates, contends that the synagogue is a month-to-month tenant paying rent significantly below market rates.

The landlord filed for eviction in Manhattan housing court in June, and a sign has since been posted indicating the space is available for rent. In response, the rabbi's legal counsel has filed a countersuit in Manhattan Supreme Court, alleging breach of contract, fraud, deceit, and negligent misrepresentation.
