Chile's Chacao Bridge reaches pillar completion milestone, targets 2028 opening
Chile’s Chacao Bridge project announced the completion of its three main pillars, reaching their maximum heights of 157 m (south), 175 m (central) and 199 m (north). The bridge, 2.7 km long, is about 66 % physically complete and represents an investment of roughly US$1 billion. The Ministry of Public Works expects the span to be operational in October 2028, which will cut travel time between the mainland and Isla Grande de Chiloé from around 40 minutes to three minutes and boost regional tourism and commerce.
The next construction phase will install the main suspension cables in 2027, followed by the deck and road surface in 2028. The cables are being fabricated in South Korea, while steel components for the superstructure are produced in Italy and are scheduled to arrive in Chile in September. The project is overseen by Biminister Louis de Grange and the contractor Hyundai Engineering & Construction.
