Chacao mayor details building safety grades and seeks private financing after deadly June earthquakes

Municipal leader Gustavo Duque said assessments of more than 1,000 structures in Chacao have classified 869 buildings as safe (green), 157 as warning (yellow) and 46 as critical (red). He emphasized that a red rating does not always mean demolition and announced a plan to attract private investors with two‑year tax incentives to fund the needed repairs.

Duque also announced that belongings recovered from the collapsed Obelisco, Petunia and Don Pepe towers will be returned to families on July 13. The process will take place at the municipal Development and Social Support office and will require identification documents. The three buildings were among the worst hit by the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 quakes on 24 June, which left at least 62 people dead, rescued dozens and left 26 other structures under preventive evaluation.
