Chacao municipality manages recovery three months after earthquakes

Three months after the double earthquake on June 24, the Chacao Municipality in Caracas is continuing its recovery efforts. Mayor Gustavo Duque announced that 5,480 apartments have sustained moderate to severe damage, and 49 buildings face structural compromises.

To fund repairs, the municipality has implemented a financing mechanism where major commercial taxpayers prepay municipal taxes to generate liquidity. So far, 11 buildings have completed structural rehabilitation through this method. The local government is also providing temporary housing in 460 hotel rooms for vulnerable residents, particularly elderly citizens, while negotiating subsidized insurance policies for affected homeowners.

In a ceremonial event at Plaza Francia de Altamira, the municipality honored more than 800 public servants, rescue workers, volunteers, and neighbors with the ‘Heroes of Chacao’ medal. The recognition highlights the rapid response, medical attention, and debris removal efforts that occurred immediately following the seismic events.
