Chaco literacy program increases reading comprehension from 27% to 61%

The 'Aprendo Leyendo' literacy program in Chaco, Argentina, has resulted in a significant increase in reading comprehension scores among primary school students. According to data presented by the Chaco Ministry of Education, correct response rates in reading comprehension rose from 27% to 61% when comparing students who finished 2024 with those who completed the program in 2025.

The initiative reached over 100,000 students, 1,162 schools, and more than 5,000 teachers. The program utilizes an explicit teaching approach, incorporating structured reading and writing instruction, oral reading, and dictation for students in first, second, and third grades. Evaluation was conducted using EGRA (Early Grade Reading Assessment) tools.

Educators participating in the program reported improved student fluency and a stronger connection between students and books. The implementation also included the distribution of specific materials and workbooks, which teachers noted helped students learn to read more quickly. Additionally, the program has seen increased engagement from families, with some parents reportedly returning to their own studies to better support their children’s literacy progress.
