Chaco prisoners manufacture beds for El Niño flood evacuees
The government of Chaco, Argentina, has implemented a program where inmates in provincial prisons are manufacturing beds and bunk beds to assist families displaced by flooding caused by the El Niño phenomenon. According to Governor Leandro Zdero, approximately 100 units have already been produced in various penitentiaries.
The initiative, which began at the Resistencia Penal Unit, is described by officials as a voluntary program focused on vocational training and prisoner reintegration. The furniture is being distributed to assistance centers in the Gran Resistencia metropolitan area to support those affected by the rising waters of the Paraná River.
Governor Zdero characterized the move as a paradigm shift in penitentiary management, stating that the measure aims to replace previous administrative neglect with a system that utilizes prison labor for social assistance and skill development.
