Chacraraju mountain sees new climbing route established
A team of three alpinists—Raymond Eckland from the United States, Josue Sanchez from Peru, and Jon Zerain from the Basque Country—has successfully established a new climbing route on West Chacraraju in Peru.
The new route, named ‘Shumaq Warmi’ (ED, WI4+, M5, 90°, 850 m), was completed on the southern face of the 6,108-meter peak in the Cordillera Blanca. The expedition took six days to complete and was carried out in September, outside of the typical climbing season.
The team faced significant challenges due to the mountain's lack of stable rock and its sharp, chaotic, and dangerous terrain. The ascent concluded on September 11.
