Chad and Niger face regional tensions amid disinformation

Authorities in Chad and Niger are addressing rising tensions fueled by disinformation and border security concerns. In the Salamat province, Mahamat Ahmat Saleh, the Prefect of the Bahr-Azoum department, formally denied reports of intercommunal conflict circulating on social media. He described a viral video as a “malicious fabrication” intended to incite tension and promised to pursue those responsible for spreading the false content.

Simultaneously, diplomatic relations between Niger and Chad face strain due to information warfare and border incidents. Following Niger’s “Klafoki” operation to secure the Bilma region against jihadist groups, rumors of armed clashes between Nigerien and Chadian patrols have emerged. Additionally, Nigerien public television recently broadcast accusations involving Chadian involvement in a failed mutiny in Niamey. Analysts warn that an escalation could destabilize the region, undermine counter-terrorism efforts, and worsen humanitarian conditions in the Lake Chad basin.
