Chad and United Kingdom strengthen climate and environmental cooperation
On the sidelines of COP17 in Mongolia, Chad’s Minister of Environment, Fisheries, and Sustainable Development, Hassan Bakhit Djamous, met with the United Kingdom’s Representative for Nature to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation on climate and environmental issues.
The discussions focused on climate financing, land restoration, population resilience, and biodiversity preservation. Minister Djamous emphasized the need for Chad to gain more direct access to international climate resources. He specifically requested British support for the accreditation process of Chad’s Ministry of Finance with international climate financing mechanisms.
The United Kingdom reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Chad in this process. Additionally, Chad plans to develop an investment plan to mobilize resources from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) that have already been allocated to the country, ensuring these funds align with national government priorities. The two nations also discussed biodiversity conservation and projects aimed at combating desertification, such as the POLOWNIA project in the Kanem region.
