Chad cholera outbreak claims 13 lives, nearly 240 cases reported

The Ministry of Health in Chad confirmed that the cholera outbreak, officially declared on 24 July, has resulted in 13 deaths and 239‑240 confirmed infections. The fatalities represent a 5.4 % case‑fatality rate, with 11 of the deaths occurring in the capital N'Djamena during August.

The disease is concentrated in the northern Hajer Lamis region and in N'Djamena. A vaccination drive has so far immunised about 50,800 people. Health officials attribute the continued spread to limited access to safe drinking water and inadequate sanitation infrastructure. The first cholera‑related death was recorded on 13 June, more than a month before the outbreak was formally announced.

The outbreak follows recent cholera waves in several African nations, including the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Nigeria, raising concerns about regional water‑borne disease control.
