Chad honors conservation leaders at protected areas forum

At the second annual Forum of Actors for the Co-management of Protected Areas (FACAP) in N’Djamena, the African Parks Network recognized several political figures and community representatives for their contributions to preserving Chad’s natural heritage.

Minister of Environment, Fisheries, and Sustainable Development Hassan Bakhit Djamous was named a National Ambassador for protected areas. He dedicated the distinction to President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, noting his support for environmental initiatives. Additionally, two local elected officials and five village organization presidents were honored as Park Ambassadors to recognize the essential role of local communities in resource preservation.

The forum, themed “Parks, engines of a future Chad: preserving today, building emergence,” focused on the role of protected areas in biodiversity preservation and sustainable development. Discussions addressed environmental challenges, including climate change, and emphasized ecological resilience through adapted governance and increased community participation. The event also highlighted 16 years of partnership between the Chadian government and African Parks.
