Chad marks independence with presidential pardon and governance critiques

On the eve of Chad's 66th independence anniversary, President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno issued a national address emphasizing unity, social peace, and reconciliation. The President announced a presidential pardon for several convicted citizens, urging the population to prioritize the national interest over individual or communal divisions.

In contrast, the political section of the Wakit Tama coalition, led by National Coordinator Zakaria Adam Zakaria, released a critical assessment of the country's governance. The organization highlighted ongoing struggles regarding access to basic services such as water, electricity, healthcare, and employment. Wakit Tama also criticized the management of natural resources, specifically oil and minerals, calling for more transparent and equitable distribution.

Furthermore, Wakit Tama denounced the restriction of civic space, the arrest of opponents, and the suspension of its own activities, characterizing these actions as attempts to silence dissent. The coalition called for the formation of a ‘broad national front’ to advocate for democracy, the rule of law, and improved governance.
