Chad seeks climate finance and land restoration at COP17

At the COP17 of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, Chad is advocating for increased climate financing and land restoration efforts to combat desertification and ecosystem degradation.

Chad's Minister of Environment, Hassan Bakhit Djamous, met with Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC, to discuss the technical and financial resources required to implement national environmental initiatives. The minister highlighted projects such as PASER and POLOwni² as essential tools for building community resilience against climate change.

With approximately 90% of its territory classified as arid or semi-arid, Chad is emphasizing its commitment to the Great Green Wall initiative. The country reports having already recovered 35,000 hectares of degraded land and planted nearly three million trees. Moving forward, Chad aims to plant 10 million trees to accelerate landscape restoration and strengthen economic resilience through environmental investment.
