Chad and France redefine defense cooperation in Paris

Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno met with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace on October 13, 2026, to redefine bilateral relations. Following the termination of a military cooperation agreement in November 2024 and the subsequent withdrawal of French troops in early 2025, the two nations have signed a new declaration of intent to structure defense cooperation.

This new framework shifts away from a permanent military presence toward a model centered on training, expertise, industry, and defense technologies. The goal is to directly enhance the operational capacities of the Chadian armed forces while respecting N’Djamena’s demand for strategic autonomy. The discussions also covered economic cooperation, regional security in the Sahel, and international issues.

While the agreement marks a diplomatic rapprochement, it does not include the return of French military bases or permanent troop deployments. The partnership comes at a critical time for regional stability, given Chad's proximity to the conflict in Sudan and security challenges in the Lake Chad basin.
