Chad's ONASER launches special road safety brigade

The National Road Safety Office (ONASER) in Chad has begun a sensitization campaign to implement a new road safety brigade and enforce the updated highway code. Dr. Zamzam Ahmat Karambal, Director General of ONASER, met with transport operators and unions in N’Djaména to explain the brigade's mission, which includes monitoring traffic, controlling and sanctioning infractions, preventing risky behavior, and assisting accident victims.

The brigade, which has been operational since September 2, 2026, aims to address critical safety issues. During recent inspections, officials noted that many drivers were non-compliant, with some lacking valid licenses or using fraudulent documents.

Authorities have issued a two-week deadline for transporters to ensure vehicle compliance, specifically regarding lighting systems, seatbelts, and tires. Operators have been urged to remove non-compliant headlights that cause glare. In response, transport representatives expressed support for the brigade but recommended the introduction of official accident report forms and speed detection devices.
