Chainalysis discloses data breach involving offensive agentic AI

Blockchain intelligence firm Chainalysis has disclosed a cybersecurity incident in which an external actor used offensive agentic AI techniques to gain unauthorized access to its internal systems and tools. The breach, detected during October, resulted in the exposure of non-sensitive customer information, including full names, email addresses, user IDs, and organizational role labels.

Chainalysis stated that there is no evidence of unauthorized access to investigation content, such as case notes or transaction results, nor to authentication credentials, passwords, MFA secrets, or session tokens. The company, which provides analytics to law enforcement, government agencies, and financial institutions, is currently working with external cybersecurity experts to patch vulnerabilities and harden its systems.

The incident highlights an industry-wide rise in AI-driven cyberattacks. While the identity of the attacker remains unknown, the company is utilizing large language models to support its security efforts and investigation.
