Chalkidiki Municipality denies misleading claims about local recycling centers
The Municipality of Chalkidiki issued a formal response to a story published in the local newspaper Evybiki Gnomi, which it described as “grossly misleading”. The article had suggested that the municipality was responsible for funding and operating 13 recycling‑center “pods” installed in October 2024 at a total cost of €4,811,820. The municipality clarified that none of the money came from its own budget; the entire project was financed through the Antoni Tritsis programme of the Greek Ministry of Interior. It also noted that no municipal resources were spent on promotional materials or other services for the centers.
According to the municipal statement, the recycling pods have been operating continuously since installation, under a contract with the appointed service company that runs until April 2028. No official notice of termination has been received. The municipality added that, should the contractor breach the agreement, the municipality will ensure the centers continue to operate and will pursue all legal avenues to protect the service.
The response emphasizes that the municipality remains committed to the recycling initiative and rejects any implication that it has mismanaged or under‑funded the project.
