CHALLENGE trial shows structured exercise extends colon cancer survival

Findings from the CHALLENGE trial indicate that structured exercise programs can reduce long-term cancer recurrence rates and extend survival for patients with colon cancer. This research shifts the perception of physical activity from a method for managing side effects, such as fatigue or brain fog, to a direct, life-saving component of oncology care.

The trial involved randomly assigning patients to either a three-year structured exercise program, consisting of 50 to 70 hours of support, or a control group receiving standard educational materials. Results demonstrated that the structured intervention provided significant survival benefits.

Despite these findings, experts note that integrating such programs into routine community oncology settings remains difficult due to constrained clinic schedules and a lack of onsite infrastructure. Specialists recommend an “assess, advise, and refer” framework to help clinicians incorporate lifestyle inquiries into standard appointments.
