Carlos Alcaraz advances in Tokyo after three-set win over Michelsen

Carlos Alcaraz began his ATP 500 Tokyo title defense with a hard-fought three-set victory over American Alex Michelsen, winning 7-6(1), 4-6, 6-1. Despite saving three set points in the opening set, Alcaraz struggled with his service and consistency, noting he felt ‘somewhat dissatisfied’ with his level but pleased with the win. He mentioned his wrist is improving daily following a previous injury.

In the same tournament, several high-seeded players faced early exits, including Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, and Casper Ruud. Matteo Arnaldi also advanced to the round of 16 after defeating Rei Sakamoto in three sets. Arnaldi is scheduled to face Alcaraz in their third career meeting during the next round.

Other notable results in Tokyo included Italian doubles pair Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori winning their first-round match, and Matteo Berrettini securing a victory against Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina.
