Challenger receives A$7.9bn takeover bid from Japan's Daiichi Life
Challenger Limited, an Australian retirement income and investment management firm, has received a non-binding, indicative takeover proposal from TAL Daiichi Life Australia. The offer, made by a subsidiary of the Japanese Daiichi Life Group, proposes to acquire the remaining 79.5% of Challenger shares at A$11.80 per share. This would value the company at approximately A$7.94 billion.
Daiichi Life already holds a minority stake in Challenger, having increased its position from an initial 15.1% to roughly 20.36%. The proposed acquisition would grant the Japanese insurer full control of Australia’s largest provider of annuities, providing exposure to the nation’s growing retirement market as Japanese insurers seek international growth opportunities due to domestic demographic shifts.
The offer is conditional upon due diligence, regulatory approvals, and a board recommendation. Challenger’s board is currently considering the proposal. In a separate quarterly update, Challenger reported strong financial performance, with assets under management rising 5% to A$31.9 billion and total sales increasing 52% to A$4.4 billion for the first quarter of the fiscal year.
