Challenges of maintaining adult friendships

Maintaining friendships becomes increasingly difficult in adulthood due to shifting life trajectories and time constraints. Unlike childhood friendships, which form naturally through shared environments like schools or neighborhoods, adult connections require intentional effort and significant time investments.

Research from the University of Kansas by Jeffrey Hall indicates specific time requirements for different levels of connection: approximately 40 to 60 hours to move from an acquaintance to a casual friend, 80 to 100 hours for a close friendship, and over 200 hours to become best friends. In adult life, finding such uninterrupted leisure time is often viewed as a luxury.

According to a 2022 review in ‘Current Opinion in Psychology’, the erosion of adult friendships is frequently driven by situational factors rather than conflict. Major life changes—such as new jobs, moving to different cities, or the responsibilities of marriage and parenting—often lead to a gradual, silent distancing between friends rather than overt arguments.
