Challenges of neurodivergent parenting and sensory overload

Neurodivergent parents, including those with ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), face unique challenges in motherhood that are often overlooked in mainstream discussions. While parenting is universally demanding, neurodivergent individuals may experience heightened sensory overload and executive functioning difficulties.

Key challenges include sensory hypersensitivity to sounds, smells, and physical touch—such as the discomfort some may feel during breastfeeding or the intensity of a baby's crying. Additionally, the constant need for organization, routine management, and rapid decision-making can exacerbate difficulties with memory, planning, and time management common in ADHD.

Pediatrician Marli Rio notes that while much attention is given to parenting neurodivergent children, there is significantly less discussion regarding the experiences of mothers who are themselves neurodivergent. Understanding these specific neurological processing differences is essential to addressing the overwhelm and burnout these parents may face.
