Challenging Heights warns of TikTok recruitment for sex trade in Ghana

Child protection organization Challenging Heights has warned of an active network using social media platforms, specifically TikTok, to recruit children into the commercial sex trade in Ghana. The exploitation is reportedly concentrated in mining communities, with victims including girls under the age of 16.

A recent joint operation by Challenging Heights and the Ghana Police Service rescued 47 victims of sexual exploitation from six communities near Goaso in the Ahafo Region. Of those rescued, 26 were transferred to Challenging Heights for rehabilitation, and 16 were identified as being under 18 years old. While many victims were foreign nationals, notably from Nigeria, the organization noted an increasing trend of Ghanaian girls being targeted.

James Kofi Annan, founder of Challenging Heights, highlighted a worrying pattern of exploitation affecting children and infants in these mining areas. He has called on the Ghana Police Service to increase operations in identified hotspots and urged the Ghana Immigration Service to strengthen border controls to prevent traffickers from moving victims across national borders.
