Chambal River steamer drifts after engine failure or fuel depletion

A steamer carrying passengers and vehicles drifted helplessly in the Chambal River on Sunday morning after experiencing mechanical issues or running out of fuel. The vessel was traveling between Nagra Sahaspura Ghat in the Morena district of Madhya Pradesh and Kela Ghat in Uttar Pradesh.

Reports indicate the vessel was carrying between 35 and 100 passengers, along with more than 50 two-wheeler vehicles. The steamer drifted through the swollen river currents, moving past the territorial limits of Morena toward the Bhind district and the Uttar Pradesh border.

Local authorities intervened to resolve the situation. Morena collector Lokesh Jangid stated that diesel supplies were sent to refuel the vessel, allowing it to navigate safely back to the riverbank. All passengers were reported safe. Officials noted that the vessel was operating without life jackets, an issue that may lead to increased scrutiny of river transport regulations.
