Chamber of Electrical Engineers demands transparency on fiber optic protocol

The Chamber of Electrical Engineers (EMO), part of the Union of Cyprus Turkish Engineers and Architects (KTMMOB), has called for the full text of a new fiber optic supplementary protocol to be released to the public.

EMO President İbrahim Aysal stated that while fiber infrastructure investment is desired, it must follow a model that protects public interest, competition, consumer rights, data security, and long-term technological interests. Aysal emphasized the need for transparency regarding the legal basis of the new protocol, how it modifies the original agreement, and its relationship to ongoing legal proceedings currently before the Constitutional Court.

The Chamber urged authorities to consider the outcomes of the Constitutional Court process, include professional organizations and industry actors in the decision-making process, and ensure fair, non-discriminatory conditions for wholesale access. Additionally, they called for mechanisms to protect competition and consumer rights, ensure the long-term technical and financial sustainability of the Telecommunications Department, and establish binding rules for data security and cyber sovereignty.
