Chambly region mayors highlight housing and transit challenges
Mayors in the Chambly constituency are highlighting key regional challenges ahead of the electoral campaign. In Richelieu, Mayor Jacques Ladouceur is calling for greater flexibility regarding agricultural land protection, arguing that the Commission de protection du territoire agricole du Québec (CPTAQ) can sometimes hinder development in areas where services are already present.
In Carignan, Mayor Patrick Marquès identified the lack of provincial funding for public transit as a primary concern. He noted that current funding models fail to address modern realities such as inflation, aging infrastructure, and the growth of paratransit services.
In Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Mayor Éric Latour is focusing on the housing crisis. Following a period where the vacancy rate dropped to 0.4%, the city is working to increase housing supply through densification and taller buildings to accommodate a projected 15% population growth by 2050. Latour emphasized that densification is a necessity, despite some resident resistance.
